First Aid

First aid is one of the basic things that school children are taught in the United States. For this reason, many schools have first aid training and a kit full of first aid supplies right in the classroom. In the even of an emergency, kids are able to handle the basics of first aid treatment as long as the first aid kits are clearly marked with the first aid symbol.

There are some basic components to first aid kits that every first aid kit should not be without. For example, all first aid bags should contain band aids, antiseptic cleaning supplies, peroxide and alcohol swabs, cloth bandages, cotton swabs, q-tips and other basics.

One of the best things about first aid, whether you are applying first aid techniques to your pet dog or your mother is that you don’t have to be a medical professional to be able to apply first aid to someone. All it is a simple bit of training and many times it is not even that much training that is required. At times, those who are forced to administer first aid are little more than the school children who have just been trained.

Keep in mind that first aid kits and first aid bags are for medical emergencies, yes. First aid kits come in several different styles, from first aid fanny packs to wilderness first aid kits to pet first aid kits. There is no substitute for a medical professional, so if the assistance of a physician is necessary first aid kits cannot substitute that.

In the case of a medical emergency, it is important to do what you can for the person who has been injured before an ambulance or more appropriate medical personnel can be sought. First aid treatment is kind of a fail safe, a stalling until additional and more appropriate medical care can be sought. Often times, a 911 operator can help to advise people of how to administer first aid treatment to a suffering person until medical assistance can get there.

Cuts and scrapes are the main things that are able to be treated with the help of the contents of a first aid kit, but anything major must be treated by a doctor or nurse at the very least. There are bandages to help stop bleeding and apply pressure and everything you might need to stall until the EMT can get to the scene all included in a first aid kit. If you aren’t trained in first aid, get trained now--you will be happy later that you did.
